A Horse in History

Winchester is on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History
Rienzi, General Sheridan’s horse was presented by the 2nd Michigan Cavalry as a gift for General Sheridan. Rienzi was black with pastern spots above his hooves. General Sheridan rode his prized horse into nearly every battle during the Civil War. After the battle at Cedar Creek, Rienzi’s name was changed to Winchester. Winchester was a Morgan horse and was 16 hands high.

The Morgan horse is one of the first breeds to be breed in the United States. Its blood traces back to the stallion. The Morgan is a compact and refined horse with strong legs and a clean cut head.

Winchester was an intelligent horse, and had immense strength and stamina. He had great quickness and held his head height. He was content under the gunshots, cannons, and fire. This horse is now stuffed and showcased in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
