Introduction
to the Historical Books: The History of Israel’s Nationhood
The historical books teach history inside the
Bible stories. Each story has a different history. 7It
covers a time period at least eight-hundred years in length. From Joshua to Esther’s
time. They also go over the monarchy period of the kingdom of Saul, David, and
Solomon, and what was eventually divided up into Judah in the South and Israel
in the North. From a later perspective the books of Chronicles, Ezra, and
Nehemiah tell a story of the Jews in Babylonia from about 597-538 B.C. Esther
(my favorite bible story) makes clear what the role of God’s people should be
under the rule of the Persians. 8These books are an
important part of describing Israel’s history as well as a writing of pure
historical facts. They are proof of God’s word, and concrete evidence of what miracles
He does for His people. From them we can learn about the relationship God has
with His people. He has a very strong amount of faithfulness and *mere love for
all of us, and He will do anything to guide, us and lead us, through the thick
and thin.
