The History of St. Augustine

Florida, The Sunshine State was first discovered in 1513 by a Spanish explorer named Juan Ponce de Leon. Its first name was La Florida which in Spanish means Flowery Land. He landed there on Easter Sunday, in Spain they call this holiday Pasua Florida.

Florida became apart of the United States in 1845. During the Civil War it became a Confederate State. After the war slaves from the St. Augustine area established a community that they named Lincolnville during 1866. St. Augustine has a total area of 10.7 square miles, but 2.4 square miles of that is water.
