Chincoteague Island Horses
This island was probably founded in the early 1600’s by
colonists. The horses on the island were brought to the area not by a ship-wreck
but by colonists needing some help with work and transport. In the 1600’s the
Island would have been mostly chicken farmland. Know however it is a modern
tourist attraction. There most popular attraction is pony penning day. This
happens the last Wednesday in the month of July. Wednesday, the horses are swum
from Assateague Island (where they live) to Chincoteague Island. On Thursday
they are sold for thousands of dollars and are out for the public to see.
Friday they are swam back to Assateague Island to the wild, back to their home
and natural habitat.
